Blue Flag

Blue Flag

The municipality beaches are among the most beautiful in the country. In addition to their characteristics and unique landscapes they are also a symbol of quality and excellence.

In 1987, the California beach, on the bay of Sesimbra, was one of the first in the country to receive the Blue Flag, fulfilling the criteria required by the Blue Flag Association of Europe, such as water quality, environmental management, equipment and safety.

This was followed two years later by Moinho de Baixo beach, and later by Ouro beach, in 2005. More recently, in 2014, this symbol of environmental quality was given to the Lagoa de Albufeira sea beach. The improvement of the bathing areas, with emphasis given to access and equipment, has been a strong commitment of Sesimbra, thus contributing to the prizes awarded to the Sesimbra beaches.

In addition, Moinho de Baixo received in 2014 the title of accessible beach, reserved for beaches that offer the necessary conditions to welcome people with reduced mobility, joining Ouro beach in the village of Sesimbra, who has been hoisting this flag for many years. The quality of the Sesimbra beaches was also distinguished by Quercus (Portuguese environmental organization), which awarded the Gold Quality Flag to the beaches Ouro, Moinho Baixo, Bicas and Lagoa de Albufeira, due the quality of its waters.

This recognition rewards the work done with cleaning beaches, construction of support infrastructures such as walkways or sanitary facilities, information desks, of which stands out the Kiosk at Ouro beach, improved parking and the promotion of a set activities for holidaymakers, in particular the beach libraries and environmental education activities, both associated to the blue flags.
