Sesimbra’s “Farinha Torrada”

Sesimbra’s “Farinha Torrada”

A visit to Sesimbra cannot end without tasting its most typical sweet: “Farinha Torrada” (toasted flour). A family tradition, “Farinha Torrada” is associated with the fishing activity, as it was taken to sea by fishermen some considering it the "energy bar" of seamen.

However, in the rural area of the municipality, there was the habit of making flour to keep at home, because it lasted a long time and in good condition. But this sweet had other properties. It was a kind of medicine used against colds and persistent cough. When someone was weak, the remedy was a little “Farinha Torrada” accompanied by a glass of black beer, which at the time could be bought in pharmacies. It is made of flour, chocolate, sugar, lemon and cinnamon and its appearance consistent and shaped like a cube or rectangle. The City Council registered the brand and recipe and Farinha, made the traditional way, can be found in many local establishments.
